Mission Accomplished: 20 Million Steps and 1000 Trees Planted

The 2021 WME Steps Challenge in partnership with Olive Gaea ends on a high note

There is no real wellbeing without a healthy planet. With this very notion in mind, WME, a leading independent multi-disciplinary consultancy providing engineering services for the built environment, chose to partner up with Olive Gaea, MENA region’s first carbon offsetting platform, for their 2021 Steps Challenge.

Involving 300 WME employees across the UAE, KSA, India, UK and Singapore, the initiative aimed to promote an active lifestyle following the outbreak of the Covid-19 health crisis. The mission was brilliantly accomplished. Participants collectively walked over 20 million steps, contributing to the plantation of 1,000 trees with Olive Gaea.

The trees, planted in partnership with SankalpTaru in India as part of the Green Shivalik project, will help rehabilitate the natural vegetation of the region that lies at the foothills of the Himalayas, where climate change is threatening the ecosystem and endemic species are endangered.

The Steps Challenge is one of WME’s initiatives focused on promoting global employee collaboration. “This year, we wanted to make every step count. That’s why we integrated the challenge in our CSR program and partnered with Olive Gaea to create an impact on the community and the planet,” said Ambika Nair, WME HR & Business Support Director.

Tree planting is one of the most engaging corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities that help make our planet a better place. More than that, it meets a number of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while having a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing.

Olive Gaea’s tree plantation portfolio helps combat desertification, preserve biodiversity, restore natural ecosystems, and support sustainable development opportunities for marginalized farmers in partnership with reputable NGOs in the MENA region and across the globe.

Plantation activities also come with tech-tools that allow users to track and check anytime the impact they are making in the communities and ecosystems they support, and provide reward points redeemable across over 200 retailers.
